At LaurenJayne.com, we believe that no matter where you came from, you have the ability to change where you’re going
What We Know
We know the one thing that unifies us as humans is that we all have things we struggle with. It doesn’t matter if it’s too many Girl Scout cookies, drinking more than you’d like after dinner, having your arguments end physically, or road rage. The list of struggles that affect our lives daily is endless, but they can be changed, stopped, redirected.
It’s Time
We believe it’s time we stop hurting ourselves and each other. It’s time to break the cycles that bind us.
What Makes a Bad Cycle
We at LaurenJayne.com believe that whatever we’ve seen, heard, and done over and over again leaves a track, creating a circuit or a cycle inside us. This forms habits/cycles that seem to happen with or without our consent.
Why We Can’t Wish These Cycles Away
Even if we’re able to keep these behaviors in check when we are in our normal state, when something triggers us, we slip into auto-pilot mode. This is where these habits or cycles play out and express themselves (good or bad). It’s where we aren’t really in control of our behavior anymore. We believe that in order to break one of these cycles or circuits inside us, we need to change the behaviors that happen before we get into auto-pilot mode. Usually, there’s between five to 10 things that happen in our bodies before we reach the point of no return.
These might be:
1. Our body gets tense.
2. We quit breathing.
3. We clinch our jaws.
4. We get so frustrated, we feel like we’ll explode.
These are just a few examples …
We at LaurenJayne.com believe that in order to break a cycle, we need to replace these behaviors with new ones, and in doing so, we keep ourselves from auto-pilot mode, where the circuit kicks in.
Examples of these might be:
1. Relax your body. Roll your shoulders, shake out your hands and feet.
2. Relax your jaw. Open and close your mouth; do not clinch your teeth.
3. Take slow, deep breaths.
4. Walk away.
We know that no matter how bad we hope and pray and promise we won’t do these behaviors anymore, we will — unless we replace the old with the new, carving a deeper path with the new.
Imagine a stream in the sand that leads to the ocean. Every time water trickles down, it’s carving a deeper path. If you stand next to the stream and hope and promise that it will go left instead of right, you’ll always be disappointed. With every action we do, we are carving a path (good or bad). We have the ability to carve our own path, but it will not happen with thoughts — it only happens with actions.
Shame Doesn’t Live Here
We at BreakIt.org believe that these cycles thrive on shame. These cycles need shame like we need air. Shame can only survive in the dark, it can only survive in solitude, it can only survive when we keep it a secret and don’t talk about what’s causing it. Here, we shine a light on our issues, find the patterns, and redirect them. Here, we are a part of a community of people who are all in the same boat. We’re all people with struggles. Whether you’re breaking a cycle that’s been going on for generations or one you’ve been creating for a few years, you have the ability to redirect your own life.
Together, we will break the cycles that bind us. We believe this and we hope you’ll join us.
